A New View on New Years Resolutions

How was your 2017? This was a crazy good year for us. We think that every year, but somehow the next has moments that top it. Each year is special because it brings about new challenges, triumphs, life lessons, and joy. 2017 was that for us. A LOT happened! Ty got into grad school, I got a new job, we moved across the country, got married and started our blog. This was our year of new beginnings. You can read more about that here.

It’s the beginning of the year, and everyone is wondering how to become their best self. Each January we used to set goals vowing to be healthy, save money, volunteer, get promoted at work and more. But we struggled to stick to those traditional New Year’s resolutions. It wasn’t until we changed the way we phrased our New Year’s resolutions that we finally stuck to them.

A couple years ago, my family was gathered around the kitchen table laughing and joking around. It was just after Christmas and my sister was telling us that she wanted to use her Christmas money to go skydiving. She asked if I wanted to go with her and I just laughed. Um no. Jumping out of a plane was way out of my comfort zone and not something I was interested in even thinking about. Right after I said that my mom got a little more serious. “Shayne in 2016 I challenge you to be more adventurous,” she said. Most people would probably get defensive that they were adventurous, but not stupid. But that wasn’t how I reacted. Truthfully, I wanted to be more courageous and adventurous.

Instead of setting silly resolutions that I knew I wasn’t going to keep, I made it my mission to choose adventure. I won’t go into all the details, but during 2016, I crossed the Kentucky Derby off my bucket list, visited Chicago, applied to my dream internship in New York City (and got it)! During the summer I moved to Manhattan. In December, I graduated early from college and moved on to the working world. It was also the year I said the easiest yes to the best question I’ve ever been asked. It was scary and fun and pushed me way out of my comfort zone. I had to constantly remind myself that it was my year of adventure and that I was going to choose adventure in every scenario. Looking back, it was easily the most adventurous year of my life and has made me more courageous moving forward.

Because of the success I saw in my first “year of”, each year after 2016, I have decided on a single goal to focus on. 2016 was the year of adventure. 2017 was the year of new beginnings. I’ve thought long and hard about my goal for 2018. Ty will tell you I have been walking around the house for the past month giving him ideas of what 2018 should be. I realized I’ve got a lot of goals. I am striving to achieve all of my goals, so how could I pick a single one to focus on? And then it hit me. 2018 is the year of determination. Once I looked up the definition, I knew it was the correct word for the year.

Determination

  1. the firmness of purpose; resoluteness.
  2. the controlling or deciding on something’s nature or outcome.

On a recent vacation, I read the book, “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” by Jen Sincero. It’s a bright yellow book with short chapters that pack advice, inspiring stories, and easy exercises to help you identify behaviors in your life that are keeping you from creating the life you want to live. I won’t ruin the book by telling you everything that was in it, but it was truly eye-opening for me. One major lesson I learned in the book was that we subconsciously create beliefs that keep us from going after what we want. They hold us back. Now that I have identified those beliefs and behaviors, I am going to work to change them. Both Ty and I have some big goals for 2018, but we are sure that with a little determination, we can accomplish them!

Here’s to our year of determination! What are you trying to accomplish in 2018? Do you create a “year of” goal or do traditional New Year’s resolutions work better for you? Share this post with a friend and make a “year of” together!
